Project description

TOMATO “The Original Museum Available To Overall project”, aims to facilitate the transnational distribution of creative, cultural and artistic content on an international scale and increase the competitiveness and economic potential of this sector. In particular it seeks to increase the access and inclusion of the public in situations of social, economic and cultural marginalization, and to enhance the learning skills of minors, through an innovative educational tool for audience engagement.

This product, called “Tomato Kit - Food for thought”, will consist of an experiential kit that transmits the cultural contents relating to the identified European museum heritage, both physically and digitally (web app and social media). These kits will be designed and co-produced thanks to the co-operation of the project partners and will consist of compact packaging containing different materials to have fun while learning the different disciplines, such as: visual art, history, science, creativity and mechanics.

This product will convey cultural and museum content outside the traditional spaces of fruition. Special attention will be given to societal resilience and social inclusion, to reach an audience of people belonging to minorities, social and economic difficulties and disabilities.

In terms of digital transition, the kit will have a dedicated software (Tomato App) that will distribute the kit’s educational contents through augmented reality techniques using mobile devices. To stimulate creativity and share resources, the cultural content offered by the app will be enriched by a platform dedicated to customers (Tomato Social). The main innovation of this research lies in devising a new multichannel cultural, didactic and scientific product, which combines the tangible learning principles that exploit the "Hands On" methodology (learning by doing) with purely digital elements (eg augmented reality) developed on museum themes to continue museum activities at home; product that is not currently on the market.

Both these macro technical research activities must be supported in parallel by a multidisciplinary research and development action to create a pedagogical product balanced between physical reality (practical experience of minors with the kit materials) and virtual reality (augmented reality, social platform /application). To obtain this balance, a study on the contents and methods of communication will be developed which will involve elements of education, information technology and STEM disciplines. The research will conceive the various experiments and technical contributions deriving from museological disciplines and territorial marketing.

The Tomato Kit will be distributed and communicated to reach a wider audience through the involvement of a communication network made available by our partners, that operate on the territory/locally, in a widespread manner. Its diffusion throughout Europe will have a considerable impact on the involvement of the community, strengthening the feeling of belonging to European culture.
