Waterfront Culture for Resilience Against Climate Change & Eco-Anxiety
Project description
WATERFRONTS brings together creativity and resilience to address the challenges of climate change along Europe’s coasts. The project empowers young artists and emerging cultural organizations in Gothenburg (Sweden), Lesvos (Greece), and Bibinje/Zadar (Croatia) to co-create innovative, arts-based solutions to environmental issues and eco-anxiety in waterfront communities. By combining socially engaged arts, marine sciences, and health-related approaches, the project demonstrates how culture can support communities affected by climate change. At its core, WATERFRONTS is grounded in inclusivity and collaboration. It actively engages local communities, particularly those facing marginalization due to disability, socio-economic conditions, or refugee backgrounds. In collaboration with climate experts, policymakers, and cultural actors, artists develop interventions that raise awareness, encourage responsibility, and strengthen community resilience. Through artistic works, community-driven initiatives, and a practical implementation toolkit, WATERFRONTS highlights the vital role of culture in protecting seas and coastal areas. The project contributes to shaping a sustainable future for Europe’s waterfronts, where creativity becomes a driver of social well-being, innovation, and environmental responsibility.
