Project description

The project Books on the Beach will gather 5 European publishers, who will cooperate on translation, publication, distribution and promotion of 33 titles for children and young adults. The goal of the project is to support the creation and circulation of quality literary works, especially the works translated form smaller languages, and make them available to a large audience in 6 European countries. The leader of the project is a Croatian publisher (Ibis grafika), and they will publish 29 books – 27 will be translated into Croatian from 13 different languages, while 2 Croatian titles will be translated into English. Each of the remaining partners will publish one book, all translated from Croatian into their national languages (Italian, Latvian, Macedonian, Slovene), strengthening the international dimension of the project.

These project activities will broaden the audience of both publishers inside and outside of their countries, as well as make the books easily accessible to all the target groups through tailored activities. The target groups of this project are children and young adults (4-14 years old), vulnerable groups, teachers, librarians (200), authors, illustrators, translators, publishers and literary agents. Through the publication of books in in 6 languages, and Croatian sign language, in print, e-book and audio book format, and promotional activities focused on schools and the general public, the project will be presented in front of an audience of over 500.000 people. The main promotional event will be the festival Books on the Beach which will be organised in collaboration with a tourist board in Jelsa, a town on the island of Hvar in Croatia. Educational activities will present a significant section of the project, with over 30 school visits and 17 educational lectures for teachers, librarians, students and parents. Some events will be online, while those in person will be reported through digital channels.
