European Theatre Lab: Drama goes digital
Priorities
- Audience development
- Capacity building: Digital shift
Project description
The Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb, in cooperation with Det Norske Theatret from Oslo, jointly created a co-production titled Do the distance non existing. In this project, two modernist classics of drama literature were stage-produced: Peer Gynt by Henrik Ibsen in Zagreb's National Theatre, and Kraljevo (King's Fair) by Miroslav Krleža in Oslo National Theatre. The projects used the innovative audio technology developed in cooperation with electronics and computers specialists. During the project the Croatian National Theatre organized an OpenLab-creative workshop titled SOUND OF TROLLS as a part of the Peer Gynt's production and open dress rehearsal of Peer Gynt for the students of the Zagreb University.
Project objective
The common goal of the project was to promote Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb and Det Norsk Theatre from Oslo as leaders of innovative technologies in European theatrical context, as well as to include young generations of audience in the creative process and the reception of classic theatre.
Gained experience
This project was an excellent example of using technological innovations in order to enrich the artistic experience. The production of Peer Gynt, wrapped in the new technology, was very important for the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb. It linked the century old theatrical institution with the technological present/future, successfully promoting the theatre art among new, younger generations. The productions attracted both younger audience and more traditional theatre-goers, who enthusiastically accepted the new technology on stage. Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb will continue to develop similar projects using new technologies in cooperation with other European theatres.
